Day 50 - Mon 27th April: Executive Wing of the New Zealand Parliament Buildings, Wellington

...or The Beehive to give it its unofficial name. It was designed by British architect Sir Basil Spence back in the 60s. It's said that he was stuck for ideas, but at the 11th hour he was inspired by this brand of matches.

Day 49 - Sun 26th April: River Valley

Not much happening today. Spent the morning at River Valley, went for a walk and this dog came along to say hello.

Day 48 - Sat 25th April: A waterfall located somewhere between Taupo and River Valley

Here's our bus driver Cam, executing the perfect swan dive next to this waterfall.
Don't worry Mum...I didn't jump in.

Day 47 - Fri 24th April: Huka Falls, Taupo

There's quite a few fast rivers in NZ. So many in fact that hydroelectric is used to generate most of the country's electricity.

Day 46 - Thurs 23rd April: Tongariro Crossing

Too many good pics to pick from today, as the scenery was stunning, but I've plumped for this one of the Emerald Lakes.

Day 45 - Weds 22nd April: En route to Taupo

Not the most inspired of photos (more 'filler', than 'killer') but here's the skyline outside the town of Taupo. See those mountains? Going up that way tomorrow.

Day 44 - Tues 21st April: The Beach, Raglan

Went to Raglan and learnt how to surf

Day 43 - Mon 20th April: A wood somewhere, Waitomo

Autumn's coming down this way

Day 42 - Sun 19th April: Ruakuri Cave, Waitomo

Took this picture by accident.
Spot prize (maybe) for the first person who guesses what it is

Day 41 - Sat 18th April: Wai-O-Tapu Park, Rotorua

There's plenty of striking colours on show in Wai-O-Tapu. This is the Champagne Pool, and for the chemistry fans outhere...the green is caused by collodial sulphur/ferrous salts and the orange by antimony.

Day 40 - Fri 17th April: Kuiran Park, Rotorua

More volcanic fun from Rotorua. Steam vents out of the ground and over the water in one of the local parks.

Day 39 - Thurs 16th April: Redwood Forest, Rotorua

Went mountain biking and a picture will be coming soon (it's on someone else's camera)

Day 38 - Weds 15th April: Pohutu Geyser, Rotorua

Rotorua is renowned for it's volcanic activity. A few miles below the surface there's molten lava, which heats the water underground. That hot water has to come out somewhere, and one of these places is the Pohutu geyser. It can reach heights of 30 metres on a good day.

Day 37 - Tues 14th April: Rotorua

Popped over to a Maori cultural night today.
Say hello to their chief.

Day 36 - Mon 13th April: Mercury Bay

Dark and mysterious: Buffalo Beach by night.

Day 35 - Sun 12th April: Mercury Bay

Went biking around the bay area today. Check out my 'retro chic' helmet, complete with go faster stripes.

Day 34 - Sat 11th April: Cathedral Cove

Here's a big splash down by the beach at Cathedral Cove.
(An actual pic of Cathedral Cove will appear at some point on my FlickR page)

Day 33 - Fri 10th April: Paihia

Here's some Maori art down by the shore

Day 32 - Thurs 9th April: Paihia

Bit of a quiet day today. Went for a walk. Up a big hill. This is the view.

Wednesday, 8 April 2009

Day 31 - Weds 8th April: Bay of Islands

Took a boat trip around the Bay of Islands and looky here....some dolphins turned up

Tuesday, 7 April 2009

Day 30 - Tue 7th April: Cape Reiga

Here's the lighthouse at New Zealand's most northern (accessible) point: Cape Reiga

Day 29 - Mon 6th April: Paihia

Here's the coastline in the town of Paihia. The treaty of Whitangi was signed here years ago, where the British promised to protect the Maori and their land from any potential foreign invasion.

Day 28 - Sun 5th April: Bay Area, Auckland

Went for a cruise around the Bay Area in Auckland. This is some kind of important lighthouse in the history of NZ. (It might've been the first one but I couldn't hear the commentary properly...it was windy)

Day 27 - Sat 4th April: Sky Tower, Auckland

Here's a guy jumping off the Sky Tower. Nutter.

Day 26 - Fri 3rd April: Crossing the international dateline

Technically, for me at least, this is the first moment of day 26, as we fly over the international date line

Day 25 - Thurs 2nd April: Hawaii to New Zealand

Goodbye Hawaii!

Day 24 - Weds 1st April: Pearl Harbour, Hawaii

Here's the remains of the sunken ship the USS Arizona. The ship was deemed too fragile to lift out of the water, so it's been left in the bay acting as a tomb for the bodies still on board, and as a memorial for the attack on Pearl Harbour back in 1941.

Day 23 - Tues 31st March: Diamond Head, Hawaii

Here's the view from the top of the volcanic crater, Diamond Head in Waikiki.
Look at all that coral.

Day 22 - Mon 30th March: Hilo, The Big Island, Hawaii

A warning sign from the town of Hilo.

One of the following is true:
a) Falling coconuts account for 6% of all Hilo ER incidents
b) In 2008, 12 people died from falling coconuts
c) Insurance companies offer coverage plans for falling coconuts
d) I make up facts on falling coconuts

Day 21 - Sun 29th March: The Volcano Park, The Big Island, Hawaii

Here's the point where the lava flowing from a Volcano on Hawaii's Big Island hits the ocean...creating new land. New land! They don't recommend breathing in the fumes, as it can contain hydrochloric acid.

Day 20 - Sat 28th March: Oahu to The Big Island

Doing a bit of island hopping today...flying to the Big Island so I can visit the Volcano Park
(apologies, but here's another mundane pic)

Day 19 - Fri 27th March: Waikiki Beach, Hawaii

Surprisingly, this is the first cliched sunset pic. Here's the view down at Waikiki Beach

Day 18 - Thurs 26th March: New York to Hawaii

A contender for the most mundane picture so far - mainly because nothing much happened today. Here's a pic of the backs of some people's heads on the flight to Hawaii

Day 17 - Weds 25th March: The Skyscraper Museum, NYC

New York has lots of skyscrapers. New York has lots of museums. Hold on a sec, how's this for an idea...
Skyscrapers + Museum = The Skyscraper Museum

Day 16 - Tues 24th March: The Empire State Building, NYC

Here's a bird's eye view from the top of the Empire State Building. Geddit? 'Birds eye view'. Ha ha.

Day 15 - Mon 23rd March: WDC to NY

Fans of TV show The Wire, or people that like US city skylines, will recognise this as the city of Baltimore (as seen from the coach back to New York). Look at all those new cars
